Spanish conversation and Andean culture.

Eligible students will have taken at least 4 semesters
of WU Spanish (through Spanish 307D). A minimum
GPA of 3.0 is required at the time of application. WU Credits
Students will earn 6 WU credits: 3 for language
and 3 for Andean Culture. Up to 6 elective credits
can be used towards the Spanish major or minor,
or 3 for the IAS major/minor. All students have
the option of 2 credits of independent research
under the supervision of WU faculty and with support
from the WU on-site director. Location
Quito, Ecuador
The program is based at the Universidad Andina Simón
Bolívar in Quito. The city of Quito is nestled
in a narrow valley between the Volcano Pichincha
and the river Mchangara canyon. Quito is 2,800m
(about 10,000ft) above sea level, with a temperate
climate throughout the year. Housing
Students will be housed in dormitories with private
bathrooms, internet connections, television and
telephone. Student Life
In addition to program study, students will be taken
on several tours of historical and archeological
sites in Quito itself. There will be another excursion
to Otavalo, which lies north of Quito, at the foot
of “Taita Imbabura” Volcano. Otavalo
is home to one of the most famous markets in Latin
America. Students may want to tour the Galápagos
Islands before or after the program dates, but this
is not included in the program cost. On-Site
Support
The Washington University on-site Director and staff
at the UASB are responsible for field trips around
Quito and to the market city of Otavalo, as well
as the support of independent student research,
language and culture courses.
